2012 Carolina's Indian Seminar

The 2012 Carolina’s Indian Seminar will be held January 20th to 22nd in Statesville NC.  This will be the 27th annual event hosted by Eswau Huppeday Lodge #560.  This is a special event, which is similar to attending the Indian Affairs program at NOAC, National Order of the Arrow Conference.

You do not have to be in the OA to attend. You not have to be a dancer or singer. You do not have to do ceremonies. But, if you have any interest in any of these areas or just want to learn more about American Indian Culture this is the event to attend. The lodge puts on this great event on for the cost of $38, which gives you three meals on Saturday and Sunday breakfast. The event is held in the Mitchell Community College Continuing Education Center. Limited sleeping space is available on the campus. We have found a hotel in the area to be a great alternative in January.

Friday night begins with a Pow-wow from 8:30 pm to 10:30. You do not have to have dance clothes to participate.  Saturday begins at 7:15am with breakfast and the sessions start at 9. During the day about 30 different sessions will be offered.  The day is broken up into 5 periods. Each year the sessions are different.  Almost all are hands on type of sessions. Sessions include all types of bead work, working with feathers, making various types of clothing. There will be sessions on how to do the various dances and make the clothing for them. There have been sessions regarding ceremonies, on women’s clothing, tanning leather, and tomahawk throwing. There will be education sessions about Native American Customs and traditions.

The culmination is the Saturday night Pow-wow. Saturday night is when some of the best OA dancers will come to participate in this annual event. Dancers from Florida, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York and North and South Carolina all show up for this annual event. Those who do not dance come early to get good seats to watch and take pictures.  We normally leave from the motel on Sunday morning so we are back in Greensboro by 10:30 or 11am.

Please see the registration form on the website; it would be great to a large group from Lodge 70.   Please contact Ken Shahbaz or Ann Jones if you have any questions.
